Growing Zones

It’s always Arbor Day at Arbor Tree Nursery!

Your plants hardiness zone is based on a number scale 1-11. In 2012, the USDA introduced a new plant hardiness zone map that breaks up the numerical categories into 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a, 9b, 10a, 10b, 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b, 13a, and 13b. The USDA added 12 and 13 growing zones to the original map and updated the average temperature for all the zones. The USDA plant hardiness zone map helps you find what plants can grow in your area. It is calculated by your areas lowest temperatures (based from 1975-2005) and which plants can withstand the temperature. Just because a plant is perfect for your hardiness zone doesn’t mean it will thrive. Be sure to always research the type of soil the plant needs. Proper watering, water filtration in the soil, and sun exposure are important to have a healthy plant.

What is your growing zone? An easy way to find your growing zone is to check out the USDA interactive map. This growing zones map will help you find your planting zone.

Knowing your hardiness zone turns a vegetable seed to a garden full of veggies. Once you discover which growing zone you are in, shop for trees and plants according to your zone.
